Emily Sasmor
AR & Videogame Installation
Emily Sasmor is a new media artist based in Brooklyn, NY, who creates "operatic" visual albums—stitching together videos, animations, and video games to explore the aftermath of violence, from domestic abuse to political terror, "hypnotizing" the audience with the collage language of information overload. Their projects have appeared in shows, festivals, and screenings including Curyatid in Hudson Yards (New York, NY), the 20/92 Video Festival (Philadelphia, PA), Squeaky Wheel Animation Festival (Syracuse, NY), and Digerati Emergent Media Festival (Denver, CO). Each project can function as both a physical device and a download/streaming media experience. Her current project, the interactive augmented reality (AR) narrative video game and installation Buzzing Golem's Forbidden Land (BGFL), casts the player as a "vengeful statue" seeking revenge against the perpetrator who sexually assaulted the work's unconscious creator. The piece aims to provide a private space in which one can vent their anger.
